Verified Bulk Editor

Documentation

How to filter products, change several fields in one task, read the preview, run or schedule a sale, check the verification report, and revert to the original values.

Last updated

Before you start

  • You need a Shopify store. The app opens inside your Shopify admin.
  • A store owner, or staff with permission to manage apps, installs it.
  • The app edits products and variants only: prices, compare-at prices, tags, metafields and alt text on existing product images.

Install the app

Install Verified Bulk Editor from the Shopify App Store. Shopify asks you to approve what the app can access:

  • Products (read and write), to filter products, preview changes, save the original values, write the changes and read them back. This covers prices, compare-at prices, tags and product and variant metafields.
  • Files (read and write), to set alt text on images that are already on your products.

The app doesn’t ask for access to customers, orders or any protected customer data.

Then choose a plan on Shopify’s plan page (see Plans). Billing is handled by Shopify.

The first time you open the app, a short tour shows the main steps. You can replay it from Help with Show tour again.

How a task works

Every bulk edit is a task, and every task goes through the same steps:

  1. Pick products with filters.
  2. Add changes: one or more field changes.
  3. Preview the current and new value of every item, with warnings.
  4. Run now or schedule it.
  5. The app saves the original values, writes the changes, then reads them back.
  6. You check the verification report, retry anything that failed, and revert whenever you need to.

The Tasks page lists every task, revert and retry with its status and verified counts.

Pick products

Choose Create task, give the task a Task name, then set filters under New task: products:

  • Collection (Choose collection), Tag, Vendor, Product type and Status (Active, Draft or Archived).
  • One Metafield condition: a product or variant metafield that equals a value, contains a value, or is empty.

Matching products shows how many products match, counted from your store just now, with a sample. The count is checked again at preview and run time, so products added to a collection later are picked up without any syncing. Variant columns are labelled Variant option name and Variant option value.

Choose Next: changes.

Add changes

Under New task: changes, choose a Field and Add change for each change. They all run in one task:

  • Price: Set to a value, Change by amount or Change by percent (use a minus sign to lower prices, for example -10). Rounding can be None, End in .99, End in .95 or Whole number.
  • Compare-at price: Set to a value, Copy current price (each variant’s compare-at becomes its price before this task’s price change, for a strike-through sale), or Clear.
  • Add tags and Remove tags: separate tags with commas.
  • Metafield: Choose metafield lists your store’s metafield definitions with their namespace.key, type and owner (product or variant). Google Shopping presets fill in Custom label 0 to Custom label 4. You can also Enter manually. Values are checked against the field’s type.
  • Image alt text: an Alt text template such as {product_title} – {position}. You can use {product_title}, {variant_title} (the product’s first variant) and {position}. Turn Overwrite existing alt text off to change only images that have no alt text yet.

Choose Preview.

Read the preview

Preview shows a summary (products, variants, images and field writes) and every change as a row: product, variant or image, field, Current value and New value.

Warnings flag rows worth a second look:

  • a compare-at price at or below the price,
  • a blank value,
  • a metafield value that isn’t valid for its type. These rows are never written.

If there are warnings, tick I reviewed N warnings to turn on Run now and Schedule. If the task has more products than your plan allows, the preview says so, with Change plan.

Run now or schedule

Run now starts the task at once.

Schedule opens Schedule task:

  • Start date and Start time, in your shop’s timezone (shown under the field).
  • End (optional, auto-revert): an End date and End time. At the end time, the task is reverted from its saved originals and verified.
  • A summary shows both times in your shop’s timezone and in UTC. Nothing is written before the start time.

Choose Confirm schedule, or Run now instead. The automatic revert at an end time is on the Standard and Pro plans.

Watch progress and stop a task

Progress shows the task’s phase (Save originals, Write, Read back) and how many items are processed, updated every 3 seconds.

If Shopify asks the app to slow down, the page says it’s waiting for Shopify’s API limit and the task continues automatically. If the app restarts, the task resumes from its last finished batch.

Stop task asks Stop after the current batch? Choose Keep running, or confirm to stop. Items not yet written are marked as skipped. You can then Revert changed items to put back only what the task already changed.

Verification report

After the read-back, View report shows the result of every item:

  • Verified: the value in your store matches what the task wrote.
  • Mismatch: your store shows a different value, often because another app or person changed it.
  • Failed: Shopify refused the write, with its error.
  • Skipped: not written, because the task was stopped, or because the value changed in your store after the preview. The app doesn’t overwrite a value it hasn’t shown you.

The summary also says how long the original values are kept. Filter the items by status, and:

  • Retry failed items runs a new task for just the failed and mismatched items.
  • Download report CSV downloads the report.
  • Revert task opens the revert screen.

Revert to the original values

Revert task shows What will be restored: how many saved originals will be written back and then read back to confirm. Empty compare-at prices are restored as empty. Tags someone else added since the task are kept.

Changed since this task lists items whose value in your store is now different from what the task wrote. They’re skipped, so later edits are kept, unless you tick Also restore these.

Choose Revert. The revert runs as its own task, with its own progress and report showing restored against saved counts, and Retry remaining for anything left over. A revert that’s interrupted picks up where it stopped.

You can revert a task for as long as your plan keeps its history: 30 days on Free, 90 on Standard and 180 on Pro after the task finishes. After that the saved originals are deleted and Revert is no longer available.

Exports

Exports builds CSV files:

  • Task report: the items of a task with their intended and read-back values and status.
  • Product fields: fields of the products that match a filter.

Pick the Columns and Save as default to preselect them for every new export. Each export is its own job. Files are deleted 24 hours after they’re created; Run again creates a new file.

Plans

The Plan page shows your current plan and its limits. Change plan opens Shopify’s plan page, where you pick or change a plan. Billing is handled by Shopify.

PlanProducts per taskHistory (revert window)Automatic revert at an end time
FreeUp to 10030 daysNo
StandardUp to 5,00090 daysYes
ProNo limit180 daysYes

Standard and Pro come monthly or yearly, with a free trial. If a paid subscription is declined or cancelled, Free limits apply until you choose a plan again.

What it doesn’t do

This version doesn’t edit wholesale or B2B price lists, Markets prices, customers, orders or collections; doesn’t import CSV files; doesn’t add, remove or reorder variant options; and doesn’t find and replace text in descriptions.

FAQ

Why does my report say “mismatch” after a successful write? After writing, the app reads the value back from your store. A mismatch means the store shows something different, often because another app or person changed it. Retry the item or check it in the admin.

Will revert give me my exact original prices? Yes, within your plan’s history window. Revert writes the saved originals, including empty compare-at prices, then verifies them and reports restored against saved counts, with retry for anything left over.

Can I stop a task that is running? Yes. Stop task halts after the current batch. You can then revert only the items that were already changed.

When exactly will my scheduled sale start? At the time shown in your shop’s timezone; the confirmation also shows the UTC time. Nothing is written before that moment.

My custom labels are verified but not yet in Google. Why? The app writes and verifies the metafield in Shopify. When the Google channel syncs it to your feed is outside the app.

Can I edit wholesale or B2B price lists, Markets prices, customers or orders? No. This version edits products and variants only: prices, compare-at prices, tags, metafields and image alt text.

Can I import a CSV? No. You can export task reports and product fields to CSV, but import isn’t included.

How long can I revert a task? For 30 days on Free, 90 on Standard and 180 on Pro after the task finishes. After that the saved originals are deleted.

Is there a yearly plan? Yes. Standard and Pro are available yearly at a discount, billed by Shopify, with a free trial on paid plans.

Does the app access customer data? No. It reads and writes product data only. Everything it stores for your store is deleted within 48 hours of uninstalling. The privacy policy has the details.

Troubleshooting

  • The product count says “Count unavailable”. Shopify didn’t answer in time. Try again in a moment.
  • No products match. Check the filters, or choose Clear filters and start again.
  • Run now is greyed out. Tick I reviewed N warnings on the preview, or check that the task is within your plan’s products-per-task limit.
  • Items show as mismatch. Another app or person may have changed them. Check the product in your admin, then Retry failed items.
  • Items were skipped as changed since the preview. Their value changed in your store after you previewed. Create a new task to preview and apply the current values.
  • Revert is no longer available. The task is older than your plan’s history window, so its saved originals were deleted.
  • An export link stopped working. Export files are deleted after 24 hours. Use Run again.
  • Something else. See Support.
